Rideshare and delivery driving: the gap in your policy

Short answer

Personal policies exclude carrying passengers or goods for money. The app's coverage is thinnest in the period you spend most time in: logged on, waiting for a job.

Why your policy does not cover it

Nearly every personal auto policy excludes using the vehicle to carry people or property for a fee. It is not a technicality the insurer might overlook; it is the basis on which your premium was calculated.

Two consequences follow. A claim that happens while you are working can be denied. And a carrier that discovers the driving afterwards can decline to renew you.

The three periods

PeriodWho covers you
App offYour personal policy, as normal
App on, waiting for a requestThe app's contingent cover, usually limited and liability-only
On the way to, or carrying, a passenger or orderThe app's full commercial cover, usually including a high deductible on physical damage

The middle period is the problem. It is where drivers spend a large share of their time, and it is where the cover is thinnest. Damage to your own car during it is frequently not covered at all unless you carry comprehensive and collision on your personal policy and the app extends physical damage into that window.

Three ways to close the gap

  • A rideshare endorsement added to your personal policy. Usually inexpensive, and the cleanest fix. Many carriers offer it; some do not, which tells you something.
  • A commercial policy, which is thorough and expensive, and generally overkill for part-time work.
  • Read the app's policy documents for the deductible that applies during a trip. It is often far higher than your own, and it is yours to pay.

Whichever you choose, tell your insurer what you are doing. An endorsement costs a little; a denied claim costs the car.

Food delivery is not the same as rideshare

Drivers often assume delivery is lower risk and therefore less of an insurance problem. The exclusion in your policy generally covers delivery too, and some carriers treat food and parcel delivery less favourably than passenger work, because of the stop-start driving and the hours involved.

Check the wording for delivery specifically rather than assuming a rideshare endorsement covers it.

If you are a federal employee

Before the insurance question, there is an ethics question. Outside employment rules differ by agency, some positions require prior approval, and a few restrict outside work altogether. Check your agency's rules and, where needed, get the approval in writing first.

Then sort the insurance. An endorsement is cheap; the combination of a denied claim and an unapproved outside job is not.

Common questions

Does my car insurance cover rideshare driving?

Generally no. Personal policies exclude carrying people or property for a fee, and a claim during that work can be denied.

When is the app's insurance thinnest?

While you are logged on and waiting for a request. Cover in that window is usually limited and often liability-only.

What is a rideshare endorsement?

An add-on to your personal policy that extends cover into the gap period. It is usually inexpensive, and not every carrier offers one.

Is food delivery treated differently?

It is still driving for a fee and is generally excluded too. Some carriers treat delivery less favourably than passenger work, so check the wording specifically.

What deductible applies during a trip?

The app's, and it is often much higher than your own. Read the coverage documents before you rely on it.

Do I need to tell my insurer?

Yes. Not telling them risks a denied claim and a non-renewal, for the sake of a small endorsement premium.
